Learning grows through connection ♡
Meet Mel
Hi, I'm Mel. I'm a private tutor and educator based in Sorrento, supporting students from Foundation to Year 9 through one-to-one and small group tutoring.
Sorrento Tutoring began in 2020 with one student during COVID. Since then, it has grown through word of mouth, local families and school connections into a community of more than 50 children I have had the privilege of teaching and mentoring.
My background includes special education and early education, with primary teaching experience across the Philippines, Singapore, Bali and Australia. Along the way, I have also supported students working within the Cambridge curriculum, giving me experience across different education systems, expectations and approaches to learning.
When I moved to Australia, one of the moments that meant the most to me was being asked to teach again. I was genuinely thrilled. What began as one family trusting me with their child's learning became the beginning of Sorrento Tutoring — and, over time, a community of local families and children I have been incredibly fortunate to grow alongside.
My teaching approach draws on play-based and nature-based learning, Reggio Emilia and Montessori principles, Jolly Phonics and structured, explicit teaching. I value having a broad toolkit because no two children need exactly the same thing. But above every method, program or curriculum, I believe meaningful learning begins with connection.
Before a child can take risks in their learning, ask questions or persist through something difficult, they need to feel seen, heard, understood and that they belong. I take time to know the person behind the schoolwork — their personality, interests, humour, strengths, worries and the things that make them light up.
Those details matter. A child's favourite topic, hobby, sport, story or way of thinking can become a bridge into learning. I use each student's unique interests and personality to make concepts more meaningful, while carefully targeting the specific skills, gaps and goals they need support with. The learning is personalised, but so is the relationship.
For me, tutoring is not a short-term fix for the next worksheet or test. It is a long-term relationship built on trust, consistency and guidance. One of the most rewarding parts of my work is meeting children in their primary years, learning how they think, watching their confidence grow, then following their transition into secondary school as they begin to discover their strengths, interests and ideas about the future.
I often think of a tutor as a lighthouse. We are not there to choose a child's destination or steer every decision. We are there to provide a steady point of connection and guidance — helping them navigate challenges, recognise their own strengths and gradually trust themselves to find their way.
As children grow, my role grows with them. Sometimes I am teaching a skill, sometimes challenging their thinking, sometimes helping them work through frustration, and sometimes simply listening. My hope is that every student leaves our time together feeling more capable academically, but also more confident, resilient, self-aware and secure in who they are becoming.
More than marks
Every child arrives with more than schoolwork. They bring their personality, confidence, worries, interests, friendships, strengths and the kind of day they have just had.
That is why I teach holistically. Academic progress matters, but so does helping children understand themselves, regulate emotions around learning, communicate with confidence, persist when something feels difficult and experience the satisfaction of working something out for themselves.
“A tutor should not steer a child’s path for them. We can be a lighthouse — a steady point of guidance while they learn to navigate their own way.”
Whole-child learning
I want students to leave tutoring with more than completed work. The goal is to help them develop the inner skills that shape how they learn, relate to others and approach challenges.
Learning to trust their thinking, speak up, ask questions and recognise their own progress.
Understanding feelings around learning, developing self-awareness and finding ways to regulate frustration or anxiety.
Discovering that mistakes are useful and that difficult work can be approached one manageable step at a time.
Building strategies, curiosity and problem-solving habits children can use when I am no longer sitting beside them.

Human connection matters
Technology can be a wonderful tool, but children also need real human connection — someone noticing when they are unsure, celebrating a breakthrough, adapting an explanation in the moment or simply giving them the confidence to have another go.
Every lesson is an opportunity to make learning engaging, meaningful and sometimes just plain fun. That might mean hands-on activities, conversation, movement, games, visual learning or following a child's curiosity far enough for a concept to finally click.
Community first
Sorrento Tutoring has grown through local families, word of mouth, school connections and the trust parents place in me with their children.
There is something special about seeing students around the community, hearing about their milestones and watching them move through different stages of school and life.
These children will become our future teachers, tradespeople, health professionals, artists, business owners, parents, leaders and neighbours. Helping them become kind, confident, capable young people strengthens more than one report card — it strengthens our whole community.
Giving back ♡
I believe education is about more than what happens during a tutoring session. It is also about kindness, service and showing children what can happen when a community chooses to help.
After flooding affected Biasong Elementary School in Talisay, Cebu, Philippines, many of the school's books and learning resources were washed away. Sorrento Tutoring Services, together with generous locals from the Sorrento community, worked together to help the school rebuild in our own small way by collecting and sending books and school supplies.
For me, this is what community looks like: people coming together, sharing what they can and helping children keep learning after something difficult has happened. A box of books may seem simple, but in the hands of a child it can become comfort, imagination, opportunity and a fresh beginning.
Kind words from families & students ♡
Parent feedback tells one part of the story. I also love the messages that arrive directly from students when they are proud of something they have achieved. Together, they are a reminder that progress can look like stronger skills, greater confidence, or simply wanting to share a win.
“You will never find a better tutor than Mel. Her skills are exceptional, the relationship she has built with my children is so special. My son’s reading and writing has improved greatly as has his confidence — all thanks to Mel.”
